National awards for Queensland career information service

The State Government's individualised training and career information service, Skilling Solutions Queensland, has won two coveted Australian Business Awards.

A/Deputy Director General Kay Giles congratulated the Queensland service for its double success in taking out 2008 awards for Innovation and Service Excellence.

"The Australian Business Awards are highly prestigious and pit our most forward looking companies against the best of the government sector," Ms Giles said.

"For Skilling Solutions Queensland, there's no greater kudos for their unique and demonstrably successful service than to be recognised in this way.

Skilling Solutions Queensland provides individualised information on training and career opportunities from 16 customer centres across Queensland and a mobile centre.

Ms Giles said the service's specially trained consultants are able to help customers make informed decision about which career to pursue, help them identify their work skills and the skills they need to gain to help move their career forward.

"Eligible clients are referred to registered training organisations for formal 'recognition of prior learning' assessments which may result in them gaining a partial or full qualification that is recognised across Australia," she said.

Ms Giles said the service was launched in 2005 as an innovative concept with the aim of removing the barriers facing many Queenslanders when trying to obtain training and career information. It was also designed to provide a pathway for those with skills to obtain qualifications faster.

More than 40,000 Queenslanders have accessed the service and 15,000 customers have been referred to training organisations for formal recognition of their skills.
